The Process
Craftsmanship
18 to 32 hours of handwork. Six meticulous stages. One masterpiece.
Pattern & Design
2-4 hours
Every TERRAE piece begins with hand-drawn patterns on archival paper. Master pattern makers account for the unique properties of each material—the stretch of mycelium, the structure of Piñatex, the suppleness of cork velvet.
Material Selection & Cutting
3-5 hours
Materials are hand-selected from our curated inventory, each piece inspected for color consistency and structural integrity. Cutting follows grain patterns unique to each material, ensuring optimal durability and visual harmony.
Saddle Stitching
6-10 hours
Our artisans employ the centuries-old saddle stitch technique at 8 stitches per centimeter—three times denser than machine stitching. Two needles, one thread, pulled through awl-punched holes. If one stitch breaks, the rest hold. This is what makes TERRAE bags last generations.
5-Coat Edge Finishing
3-5 hours
Every edge receives five coats of plant-based edge paint, hand-burnished between applications. The result is a glass-smooth finish that resists wear, water, and time. This alone takes longer than many brands spend on an entire bag.
Quality Inspection
2-4 hours
A 47-point quality inspection evaluates every stitch, edge, hardware placement, and material surface. Only pieces that meet our exacting standards receive the TERRAE stamp. Approximately 5% are returned for rework.
Serial Numbering & Authentication
1-2 hours
Each approved piece receives a unique serial number (TERRAE-XXX-2026-XXX) hand-stamped into the interior. This number links to a digital certificate of authenticity, material provenance, and artisan attribution.
